About
Yvonne Kander holds an M.A. in Dance in Higher Education from New York University, a B.A. in Theater/Dance from Queens College and an A.S. in Performing Arts from Queensborough Community College. She is also a certified teacher in K-12 through NY State and GA with a specialization in Dance and has taught interim at Queens College and NYU. She has taught at Sacred Heart School in Manhattan (lower school), Talent Unlimited NY and Performance Conservatory HS and Bronx Envision Academy Simultaneously. She became head of the Arts Program and was instrumental in developing a 4 year curriculum incorporating Common Core with the Blue Print for the Arts in NY. She is also currently applying for her certification as a Physical Therapist and Dance Therapist through ACE.
Yvonne was a veteran, tenured teacher with the Board of Education in NY for over 10 years. She was one of the few teachers in NY city teaching pointe, Laban Notation and Dance Notation. While teaching at the High School level she founded a touring Dance, Drama and Vocal Touring Team which performed throughout the year at various schools, colleges and community events. In addition, they performed during the 4 main concerts directed and produced by Yvonne during the year. Many of her graduated students have received record deals, tour, have joined professional dance companies or continued on into professional careers.
Yvonne has danced and studied for 48 years: modern, (Hawkins, Graham, Limon) jazz, lyrical, ballet, pointe, tap, rhythm tap, musical theater, choreography, improvisation and administrative areas as well. Besides being a musician, composer, artist, state craft designer, lighting designer, sound technician, music editor, costume designer and choreographer, she has produced and directed many shows for Queens College, QCC, local dance studios and various projects. She has also worked for a gymnastics school as a gymnastics choreographer and head dance teacher.
Yvonne has danced with several companies professionally, including In Young Sohn's Korean Dance Company at Lincoln Center and performed on Broadway as well. She has performed and choreographed in Faculty Concerts both Undergraduate and Graduate at all three of the Universities she studied at. She also danced and choreographed in NYU's Master's Concert at the Fredrick Lowe Theater in Manhattan. In addition, she has previously competed locally and internationally in various dance competitions and she held second place Nationally.
Yvonne received a scholarship to perform in Chichester, England during the Fringe Festival. She choreographed, dance and composed original work which was performed for the Pope, at the Festival itself and brought back to the states and performed at Colden Center. The score was recorded at Aaron Copland School of Music and made press in the NY Times for her work with a blind lead dancer.
Yvonne has performed with various bands, has recorded professionally and owns her own entertainment company. She has also done work as a spokes model for Panteen, including appearances at Nassau Coliseum. She received the Queens College Raymond D. Gasper Award for excellence in dance, is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Delta Phi Epsilon, The Golden Key National Honor Society, a member of AAHPERD (American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance) and the NDA (National Dance Association).
Since moving from NY 4 1/2 years ago, she has relocated to Dawsonville on Lake Lanier. She is thrilled to be teaching
at SCHS! She sits on the Board of Directors at the Bowen Arts Center and on the Board of Directors for the Gainesville Ballet. She is married and a mother. Her son is an accomplished musician and her step sons: one owning his own clothing line and the other a fireman for NYC. She loves to dance, draw, sing, fish, camp, golf, spend time with family, play with her dogs, cats and turtles and teach.
Her premise to her students is: to let their dreams soar and never stop looking for their inspiration. Keep every door open as well as their hearts.
